Rocha nearly 700 votes ahead of Oliverio in District 4 race

Santa Clara County supervisor candidate Don Rocha’s lead over Pierluigi Oliverio climbed to 676 votes today, with only four percent of ballots remaining uncounted.

Whoever gets the second most votes will face off against Susan Ellenberg in the November election for the District 4 seat. Ellenberg picked up 33 percent of the votes in Tuesday’s primary to emerge as the early front runner.

The latest tally of Tuesday’s primary election results show Rocha leading with 13,476 votes, or 20.71 percent, to Oliverio’s 12,800 votes, or 19.67 percent. Oliverio had the early lead up until Saturday morning when the numbers flipped in Rocha’s favor.

The county has a policy that triggers a recount if there is a .25 percent differential.

The remaining ballots to be counted are provisional ballots and those the county registrar’s office received on and after election day. Registrar of Voters spokesman Eric Kurhi last week said he expects all remaining ballots to be counted by June 19.

Along with Ellenberg, who is president of the San Jose Unified School District board, Oliverio and Rocha, former and current San Jose council members respectively, are vying to succeed termed-out Supervisor Ken Yeager.

The registrar’s office will provide an updated tally on Wednesday morning.
