San Jose: Dead inmate identified as murder suspect

By Khalida Sarwari

A 28-year-old inmate who died at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose earlier this week has been identified by the county coroner’s office as Johnny Lozano. He was awaiting trial for the 2013 murder of a 19-year-old San Jose State University nursing student.

Lozano was pronounced dead at the medical center on Tuesday evening. He had been admitted for a preexisting health condition April 5, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office did not have his cause of death.

Lozano, a San Jose resident, had been serving time at the Santa Clara County Main Jail since August 2013 while awaiting trial for murder and other criminal charges.

Investigators believe Lozano was involved in the 2013 gang-related killing of 19-year-old Kimberly Chico, an aspiring nurse from East San Jose who was driving near Third and East San Salvador streets when a stray bullet hit her.
