Saratogans secure college degrees, dean’s list honors

Several Saratogans celebrated recent graduations and earned dean’s list honors at universities throughout the state and country.

Helen Uong of Saratoga was awarded a doctor of medicine degree at Creighton University’s commencement ceremony on May 18 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.

Saratoga resident John David Schmidt graduated cum laude from the University of San Diego on May 26. Schmidt earned a bachelor’s degree in accountancy.

Guy Quanrud, a graduate of Saratoga High School, graduated from Albion College in May with a degree in chemistry.

Nicolle Chan, the daughter of Saratoga residents Victor and Cynthia Chan and a 2009 graduate of Saratoga High School, graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in East Asian studies and chemistry from Bucknell University on May 19. Chan was also named to the university dean’s list for the spring semester. A student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean’s list recognition.

Saratoga resident Benjamin Altabet was named to the Seaver College dean’s list at Pepperdine University for the spring semester. In order to earn dean’s list honors, students must be in the upper 10 percent of their class and maintain a 3.5 or better grade point average. Altabet was among 258 students to receive the honor.

Sophia Ann Cooper, a resident of Saratoga in the school of engineering and science at Baylor University, was named to the dean’s academic honor list for the fall semester. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must be an undergraduate with a minimum grade-point average of 3.7, while enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours.

Derek Bond of Saratoga was named to the Bentley University dean’s list for the fall semester. Bond is a senior and accountancy major. To be named to the dean’s list, a full-time student must have a grade point average of 3.3 or higher with no course grade below 2.0 during the term.

Allison Hata, a resident of Saratoga, was named to the dean’s list at Boston University for the fall semester.

Ian Wong, a graduate of Saratoga High School, was named to the University of Colorado-Boulder dean’s list for the fall semester. He is majoring in psychology.

Philip Wu, a senior from Saratoga, received high honors for the winter term at Phillips Exeter Academy.
