SF 49ers to host ‘Diners for Niners’ taste-testing

San Francisco 49ers players will have an opportunity to sample ‘Chicken Taquito Spikes’ named after linebacker Takeo Spikes and other menu items named after 49ers players prepared by a group of restaurant owners in Santa Clara today.

The “Diners for Niners” event was planned in response to a term sheet agreement reached between the team and the city of Santa Clara. The agreement, approved by the City Council at the end of its marathon June 2 meeting, calls for the construction of a $900 million stadium to be built a lot next to the Great America amusement park.

The agreement still has to be approved by Santa Clara voters, and a measure will be placed on the ballot regarding the stadium deal next spring.

Team spokesman Steve Fine said the “Diners for Niners” event is a good sign the team will be welcomed if the plan moves forward.

“It’s a really great event. It’s really wonderful to see the support from the business community for this project,” Fine said.

Players and members of the media will taste such dishes as “Baby Zak Ribs” named after fullback Zak Keasey and “Chi-Lo Mein” named after offensive lineman Chilo Rachal.

The taste testing will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the 49ers Training Facility, located at 4949 Centennial Blvd.

Today’s event will not be open to the public, but fans can still vote on names and propose new ones at http://dinersforniners.com/.
