From law enforcement and human trafficking to music and hiking trails, the subjects of lectures at the Saratoga Foothill Club over the next six months are thought-provoking and diverse.

The Foothill Club will launch its 19th annual public lecture series on Oct. 22 with a presentation by Rick Sung, captain of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s West Valley division.

Sung, who is known for his focus on the community and maintaining good relationships with the public, will speak on the many aspects related to policing and outreach. There will be a question-and-answer period following his talk.

The sheriff’s captain graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminology from San Jose State University and a master’s degree from Golden Gate University. Prior to entering the police force he had a career in high tech and has also been a restaurant owner.

Each month, the Foothill Club will be presenting new speakers that will discuss a variety of topics.

Mort and Elaine Levine, the former owners of this newspaper and others in the area, will stop by the club on Nov. 12 to discuss the legacy of the Cora Older Trail and the Fremont Older Open Space Preserve.

The Levines’ lecture on the Olders will mark the final lecture of 2015. On Jan. 20 Betty Ann Boeving will talk about an organization she founded called the Bay Area Anti-Trafficking Coalition. Boeving has been leading, teaching and speaking about community-based strategies to fight human trafficking since 2002.

On Feb. 25, the Saint Michael Trio will give a talk titled, “Classics to Contemporary Music.” The following month, on March 16, David Couzens will share “Images of Ireland.” The final lecture will be courtesy of Shyrl McCormick, who will attempt “Putting ‘Civil’ Back into Discourse” during her 10 a.m. talk on April 26.

In March and April, the Foothill Club will also present a special art appreciation lecture series.

The public lectures take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Foothill Club, 20399 Park Place, in Saratoga.

The cost for the entire series is $100; single lectures are $25. For questions, call 408.996.8050.
