Skeletal remains found under San Mateo home

Skeletal remains, possibly belonging to a Native American, were discovered under a San Mateo home Friday. However, authorities said they haven’t yet determined if the bones are human.

A construction crew discovered the remains about 12:30 p.m. as they were digging under a house being renovated in the 900 block of 10th Avenue, said San Mateo police Sgt. Al Baccei. Because of how deeply entrenched the bones were, it appears they have been there for years, he said.

“Some of them are full-length bones,” Baccei said. “There was, I believe, a jaw bone, there was a pelvis bone and a few other bones. That was farmland years ago and even going back further, so they could be potential Indians on the land.”

Detectives and the coroner arrived at the scene to recover the remains.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s pathologist will likely examine the bones Monday to determine the species and cause of death, Baccei said.

“I think the pathologist can look pretty quickly and determine if they’re human or not, then you have to go to the next stage of how did they get there and why were they there,” he said.
