Sunnyvale police warning residents of spoof calls

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety is warning residents of spoof calls that may include using the city’s main line and utility number to solicit personal information or sell solar panels.

Residents have reported receiving calls from a (408) 730-7500 and (408) 730-7400 number typically in the evening and after the city’s regular business hours. While the numbers appear legitimate, the calls are made by scammers who use numbers from legitimate agencies or companies to deceive people and gather information, the city’s public safety department said in a post on its Facebook page today.

The post went on to say that “the city is not making these calls and unfortunately we cannot block them because they come from an unknown location.”

For now, the only recourse residents seem to have is to ignore the calls or avoid sharing their personal information over the phone. But blocking the numbers will also block the city’s legitimate main and utility phone lines.
