Sunnyvale voters elected two incumbents and one new council member while passing three measures, according to the latest election results.
With all precincts reporting, Gustav Larsson, 51, a software engineer for a cybersecurity startup, defeated Henry Alexander III, a 47-year-old regional marketing operations manager for Crystal Equation and an adjunct professor at San Jose’s Cogswell Polytechnical College, with 59.94 percent of the vote, according to unofficial figures.
Incumbent Mayor Glenn Hendricks, 57, bested Joshua Grossman, 50, a tech exec and attorney, with 56.43 percent of the vote.
And, in a narrower race, Mason Fong, 27, an aide for San Jose Councilman Chappie Jones, edged out John Cordes, a 60-year-old retired engineering manager, with 53.55 percent of the vote.
“I’m feeling good,” Fong said after wrapping up his election night party at Fashion Wok in downtown Sunnyvale Tuesday night. “I am cautiously optimistic, but it’s not over until it’s over. I’m not anywhere near to calling it.”
Voters also passed an initiative to increase the hotel tax from 10.5 to 12.5 percent. The city estimates that the revenue generated annually from the tax increase will be around $2.9 million for city services such as emergency response, street repair and senior and youth programs.
Measure L, a proposed charter amendment that will give the City Council control in filling council vacancies through either a special election or an appointment, also passed with 71.27 percent of the vote.
Measure GG, Sunnyvale School District’s $100 million bond measure, which aims to raise $6 million annually for 32 years at a rate of 1 cent toward the renovation and modernization of the district’s schools, garnered 69.04 percent yes votes.
