Two teenagers from San Jose go on driving rampage through Campbell

Campbell police officers had their hands full with a pair of teenage boys who went on a rampage in a stolen Honda and Mercury minivan last weekend.

The boys, both 17, were driving through the city the evening of March 10 when one of them crashed into a car at First Street and Civic Center Drive, according to Campbell Police Capt. Charley Adams. The boy then fled to the Fry’s Electronics store on E. Hamilton Avenue, where he dumped the Mercury minivan he had crashed and was scooped up by his friend in a stolen Honda Accord, said Adams.

Just as officers arrived, the boys peeled out of the parking lot in the Honda and jumped on southbound Highway 17, ignoring the officers’ orders to stop.

Officers pursued the boys at high speed for about 15 seconds before realizing that by doing so, they were compromising the safety of the general public, Adams said. The chase was off, but the boys were still speeding when they exited on Camden Avenue. The driver came around the corner at Dell and Camden avenues too fast and rammed into a motorhome that was parked on the street.

Once the Honda came to a stop, both boys threw open their doors and took off running, Adams said. Officers arrived in the area and quickly handcuffed one of the boys. They found the second boy about a half an hour later near businesses in the area and took both into custody.

Later, both boys admitted to stealing the cars, said Adams.

Police declined to identify the boys because they are underage. They are both from San Jose, and it is unclear what they were doing in Campbell on Saturday night, Adams said.

The teens are being held at juvenile hall on charges of possession of stolen property, hit and run, evading arrest, resisting arrest and driving without a license.

No one was injured during the pursuit or the two accidents, according to Adams.
