50-foot Redwood tree falls on two parked cars, injures person

A 50-foot redwood tree came tumbling down on a pair of cars in San Jose this afternoon and injured one person, a fire department spokesman said.

The incident occurred around 1:10 p.m. in the area of Capitol Avenue at Berryessa Road, fire Capt. Chuck Rangel said.

The tree fell over on two parked cars, one of which was occupied, Rangel said.

Four people in the car were able to remove themselves from it before firefighters arrived. One person was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, he said.

Rangel said city arborists were working to cut the tree.

It appears the stormy weather caused the tree to fall, but it likely already had unhealthy roots, he said.

“I think if it was a healthy tree, it wouldn’t have come down,” Rangel said.
