Police seek suspect in morning assault

Santa Cruz police are looking for the suspect in the assault of a 20-year-old man during a fight early this morning.

Officers responded at about 2 a.m. to a report of a fight and people falling through a storefront window in the 700 block of Pacific Avenue.

Upon arrival, one officer who was examining the area noticed a broken storefront window and heard a single gunshot fired from Spruce Street and Pacific Avenue, police said.

The officer went to the area and found the assault victim.

The suspect was last seen running west on Spruce Street, police said. Officers established a perimeter but were unable to find him.

The victim was treated for moderate lacerations he suffered in the fall and was later released.

Witnesses told police an argument between the victim and suspect had led to a fight, during which they both fell through a storefront window. The victim managed to escape from the suspect and ran from the 700 block of Pacific Avenue to Spruce Street, where he heard a single gunshot but was not struck, police said.

The suspect was described as a man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6 feet tall, with short hair, and a thin build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
