Police in Palo Alto arrested an 18-year-old Gunn High School student on suspicion of carrying an Airsoft gun that prompted a lockdown of the campus for nearly 45 minutes Thursday, a police agent said today.
Weston Healy was arrested on one felony count of possession of weapon on a school campus, Agent Scott Savage said.
Healy was taken into custody about 3 p.m. Thursday after police allegedly found in his car an Airsoft gun, a 7-inch military-style knife, one spade shovel with a 4-inch pick, a hatchet with a removable saw, and two facemasks, Savage said.
A city worker called police shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday to report seeing two men driving through campus with the passenger holding what appeared to be an assault rifle in his lap, police said.
Nearly 20 Palo Alto and Stanford University police officers responded and ordered students, who were just getting out of school for the day, to return to their classrooms and lock the doors.
During the lockdown, officers searched parking lots and classrooms and eventually found both the car as well as the two men.
The lockdown was lifted at about 2:45 p.m. and no one was harmed.
In a statement to the community released Thursday, the school said, “This afternoon as students were leaving class, Gunn experienced a Code Red as a safety precaution. At no time were students or staff in danger. Students and staff did an excellent job of following the Code Red procedure.”
Healy is being held at Santa Clara County main jail.
