The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office today identified the second victim of a double fatal crash in downtown Gilroy early Thursday morning as 28-year-old Robert Aguirre Jr. of Gilroy.
The crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. near Sixth and Alexander streets and claimed the lives of Aguirre and 30-year-old San Martin resident Joel Zabala Jr.
The driver of the car, 18-year-old David Torres, of Gilroy, was arrested in connection with the crash after he was treated for minor injuries, police said.
Torres initially ran away, but was eventually located nearby and taken by helicopter to a local trauma center, police said.
He was booked into Santa Clara County main jail on charges of DUI causing injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and fleeing the scene of an accident after committing vehicular manslaughter, according to police.
