A 70-year-old man who was apparently crushed to death by a tree in Scotts Valley Tuesday afternoon was identified by the Santa Cruz County coroner’s office as George Doub.

Doub was using a chainsaw to cut an oak tree at 160 Gaffney Way around 2:10 p.m. when the tree rolled over and pinned him to the ground, Scotts Valley Fire District Capt. Andy Knox said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, Knox said.

Knox said the tree had come down in a storm, and that Doub was trying to cut it for firewood.
