A man who was rescued from a ravine at Alum Rock Park in San Jose Wednesday afternoon is in healthy condition, a fire department spokesman said today.

A report of a stranded hiker came in at about 11:30 a.m., San Jose fire Capt. Charles Rangel said.

A Cal Fire helicopter took off just after 2:30 p.m. with a firefighter and rope to hoist the hiker from a 70-foot ravine, Rangel said.

The hiker, who is a San Jose resident in his late 20s or early 30s, was rescued about an hour later and did not appear to have any injuries, Rangel said.

Earlier in the day, the hiker and a friend wandered off the main trail as they were trying to get to the top of a summit during a hike, Rangel said. On their way back they lost their way, so the hiker decided to go to the bottom of the creek and told his friend to stay behind.

The terrain to the creek was steep, however, and the hiker was not able to go up or down, Rangel said.

His friend managed to find his way back and reported the incident to a park ranger, Rangel said.
