A woman narrowly escaped serious injury or death in Portola Valley today when a large oak tree fell onto her car with her behind the wheel, a battalion chief said.

The Portola Valley woman was driving down Old La Honda Road around 7:45 a.m. when an oak tree fell on the hood and rear of her Honda sport utility vehicle, Woodside Fire District Battalion Chief Don Romero said.

The woman, who appeared to be in her mid-40s, managed to get out of the vehicle on her own and did not suffer any injuries, Romero said. The damage to her Honda was minimal.

“She was quite fortunate,” Romero said.

He said heavy wind and rain contributed to the tree’s fall.
