Storm prompts safety tips in San Jose

Strong winds and heavy rain knocked down power lines and trees in San Jose this morning, but fire Capt. Scott Kouns said roads have not been significantly impacted.

However, Kouns advised residents to stay home in stormy weather unless it is absolutely necessary to drive. Residents should be prepared for power outages by keeping batteries and flashlights on hand, he said.

National Weather Service forecaster Brian Tentinger echoed Kouns’ call for caution on the roadways.

“Just be aware of driving along the wet roads,” Tentinger said. “Don’t drive through standing water because that could be dangerous.”

Tentinger said the series of storms is atypical for this time of year in the Bay Area, but that the worst will be over by Thursday. He said it appears there might be another round of showers on
Thursday but they will not be as intense as the rainfall today and Tuesday.

As of 10:45 a.m., San Jose’s rainfall had reached 1.06 inches.

Gardner Elementary School on Illinois Avenue in San Jose experienced a power outage this morning but all classes were held as scheduled, said San Jose Unified School District spokeswoman Karen Fuqua.

No problems were reported at the district’s other schools.
