A driver who was killed in a two-car crash on U.S. Highway 1 in Monterey County on Wednesday morning has been identified by the coroner’s office as 49-year-old James Steinmetz, of Sacramento.
The crash happened at about 8:30 a.m. in Carmel Highlands just south of the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve entrance, according to Cal Fire’s San Benito-Monterey unit.
Steinmetz was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other victims were transported to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula with injuries. One was Steinmetz’s passenger; the other was the sole occupant of the other car.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
