Firefighters battle suspicious brush fire in Arana Gulch

Santa Cruz firefighters battled a suspicious brush fire in Arana Gulch on Thursday evening.

Firefighters responded around 6:40 p.m. to a report of smoke in the area between the harbor and Soquel Avenue.

Upon arrival, they found a slow-moving fire about a quarter-acre in size burning in a mixture of grass, brush and trees, according to the fire department.

Crews used a 4-wheel brush rig and a 500-gallon water tank to extinguish the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

The fire is considered suspicious, but its cause remains under investigation.

The Santa Cruz Central Fire Protection District and Harbor Patrol assisted in the response to the blaze.
