A 25-year-old inmate who committed suicide in a Salinas jail early this morning has been identified as Daniel Lariviere, according to the Monterey County coroner’s office.
Lariviere hung himself from a fixture in his single cell using his T-shirt, sheriff’s Cmdr. Lisa Nash said.
His body, along with a suicide note dictating the distribution of his property, was found around 3:05 a.m.
Medical personnel tried to revive him but were unsuccessful, Nash said.
An autopsy conducted this morning found Lariviere died of asphyxia due to hanging.
Deputies who had seen Lariviere an hour earlier during a welfare check said he did not appear to be in distress.
Lariviere, a resident of Salinas, was arrested Tuesday on charges of child endangerment, kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. He had previously been arrested on domestic violence charges, Nash said.
The sheriff’s office and district attorney’s office are investigating the case.
