Firefighters are responding this afternoon to a gas leak in downtown San Jose, a fire spokesman said.

The leak was reported around 2:30 p.m. at Seventh and Taylor streets, fire Capt. Chuck Rangel said.

Rangel said a construction crew severed a half- to 1-inch gas line.

There were evacuations in the area, but Rangel did not know if it was at an apartment building or house.

No injuries have been reported, he said.
