PG&E workers secure broken gas line downtown

PG&E crews have secured a gas line in downtown San Jose that was broken this afternoon by a construction worker, a fire spokesman said.

The leak was reported around 2:30 p.m. at Seventh and Taylor streets, fire Capt. Chuck Rangel said. Crews secured the 2-inch gas line at 4:06 p.m.

Rangel said a contractor severed the gas line using a street cutter in preparation for putting new water lines in the street.

A shelter-in-place warning was issued for residents in all surrounding businesses and homes, but the warning has since been lifted.

No injuries were reported, Rangel said.

The leak prompted the closure of Seventh and Taylor streets in all four directions. The road was expected to reopen by 4:45 p.m.
