A Santa Clara County Superior Court judge today sentenced a man convicted of murdering San Jose police Officer Jeffrey Fontana in 2001 to life in prison with no possibility of parole.
DeShawn Campbell, 30, was convicted in May of second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of the 24-year-old police officer who had only been on the force a few months when he was shot to death on Oct. 28, 2001.
Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Diane Northway ruled that Campbell is mildly mentally retarded, meaning he is not eligible for the death penalty.
