Volaris has launched service between Mineta San Jose International Airport and Guadalajara, Mexico.
The San Jose Fire Department greeted Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena and other officials from Mexico and Volaris with a water salute on the airfield when the first flight landed Friday at 11:25 a.m.
San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed joined local dignitaries in greeting the flight.
“We’re looking forward to the long-term success and growth of Volaris in San Jose,” Reed said in a statement. “They’re an outstanding addition that will provide more air service and travel choices for our community.”
Volaris is the first new airline starting service at Mineta San Jose International Airport since October 2005. San Jose became the third U.S. city added to Volaris’ network, along with Oakland and Los Angeles.
Some of the reasons San Jose was chosen included the size of the Mexican-American community in San Jose and the Bay Area, the airport’s location for Silicon Valley technology businesses, and the convenience and efficiency of the recently modernized airport, airport officials said.
Daily departure service from San Jose to Guadalajara is at 12:35 p.m.
