Cal Fire is continuing to investigate the cause of a kitchen explosion in rural Santa Clara County that sent four people to the hospital on Sunday, Capt. Jerry Agenbroad said.
The explosion was reported at about 11:35 a.m. at a small home on a ranch at 38763 San Antonio Road, about eight miles east of the Lick Observatory, Agenbroad said.
Four people were injured, Agenbroad said. One person suffered burns to 30 percent of his body and another person was burned on 50 percent of his body.
One of the two others was also hurt in the explosion; the other suffered a shoulder injury shortly afterward, Battalion Chief Jim Crawford said. All four victims are adults, he said.
Three were airlifted to a burn center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose and the fourth was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Agenbroad said that by the time firefighters arrived, the fire had been extinguished. It caused minimal damage to the home.
“Whatever exploded did not cause the structure to catch on fire,” he said.
