Car-free Saturdays start at Golden Gate Park

Bicyclists, pedestrians and roller skaters in Golden Gate Park will have more recreational space starting today when the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department opens John F. Kennedy Drive to offer a car-free space.

Car-free environments promote a healthy and active lifestyle because they offer space for exercise, according to Dr. Naomi Bardach, a member of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.

“Biking is a great way to get kids moving, and a great way to get families moving,” Bardach said in a statement.

The car-free area begins at Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive and will continue along John F. Kennedy Drive to Transverse Drive from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Bicycle Coalition will kick off today’s third annual Healthy Saturday program, which runs through September, with a potluck picnic and two-wheel bicycle training for children beginning at noon.
