The San Jose Fire Department is investigating a blaze at a home Tuesday evening in which multiple cats perished, Capt. Chuck Rangel said.

The two-alarm fire was reported in the basement of a home in the 1000 block of Bird Avenue at 7:56 p.m. and was controlled about an hour later.

About 20 to 30 cats lived at the house, but the number that died in the fire has not been determined, Rangel said.

No injuries were reported to people, but a resident was offered assistance from the American Red Cross, Rangel said.
