CHP to offer traffic safety class for teens

The California Highway Patrol will offer a course in San Jose today to educate teen drivers and their parents about responsible driving.

The “Start Smart” program will address collision avoidance techniques, California traffic laws, traffic collision trends in the local area and driver responsibilities.

Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for the 15 to 20-year-old age group, according to the CHP. CHP Lt. Spencer Boyce said the goal of the class is to ensure teens understand the importance of taking driving seriously.

“New drivers in their teens continue to suffer a disproportionate number of injury and fatal accidents. This is one trend that needs to be broken,” Boyce said. “Working together, we can help our teens to safely take their place on our state’s highways.”

The class will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the San Jose CHP office at 2020 Junction Ave.

For more information about the class, call CHP Officer Brandie Dressel at (408) 467-5400, ext. 258.
