Hundreds of men are planning to don women’s shoes – including stilettos, pumps, and platforms – and strut their stuff on the streets of downtown San Jose this afternoon to raise awareness about the issue of sexual violence.
The event, titled “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” is organized by the YWCA of Silicon Valley, and is now in its ninth year.
Kelly Ramirez, a chief development officer for the YWCA, called the event a “lighthearted approach to the very serious issue of sexual assault.”
“We recognize that sexual assault is a community-wide issue, not just for women,” she said. “In order to address this issue and illuminate it for the community, we have to engage men.”
The cost to register for the event starts at a minimum of $100, and includes a pair of women’s shoes, as well as an event T-shirt and hat.
Proceeds will benefit YWCA programs such as a 24-hour hotline, counseling for victims and their families, and advocacy efforts.
Last year’s event raised more than $35,000. Ramirez said the organization has alreadyexceeded that amount this year, with roughly 200 pre-registered participants and hundreds more men expected to sign up on site.
The march will include newcomers and veterans alike. Ramirez said flip-flops and sandals will be provided for those who are inexperienced in heels.
The half-mile march will begin at 5 p.m. at Plaza de Cesar Chavez and end at the San Jose Repertory Theatre.
Co-chairs for the event include Police Chief Chris Moore, Fire Chief William McDonald, San Jose State University Police Chief Peter Decena, and Santa Clara County Assessor Larry Stone.
