Two lanes of southbound state Highway 87 in San Jose are blocked this evening after a man jumped off a light rail station platform onto the highway and was critically injured, a Santa Clara County sheriff’s spokesman said.
The incident, which was believed to have been a suicide attempt, was reported to the sheriff’s office at about 3:55 p.m., Sgt. Rick Sung said.
A man in his late 40s climbed a guardrail on the platform of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority’s Virginia Station, located at 362 W. Virginia St., and jumped off.
The station is located in the median of Highway 87 at Virginia Street. He landed in the No. 1 lane but was not run over by any cars, Sung said.
That lane, along with the No. 2 lane was blocked, Sung said.
The man was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. The extent of his injuries is not yet known, but he is in critical condition, Sung said.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
The lanes are expected to reopen around 6:15 p.m.
