A man was arrested last week on suspicion of attempting to sexually assault a woman at the Regional Medical Center of San Jose’s medical office buildings, police said today.

Officers arrested 21-year-old San Jose resident Steven Cooley on Aug. 3, one day after he allegedly entered a restroom, exposed himself to a female janitor, and attempted to assault her, police said.

The woman screamed, causing him to leave the area, police said.

The following night, a pair of patrol officers located Cooley based on surveillance photos and a suspect description while canvassing the area.

They took him into custody following a preliminary investigation, which revealed Cooley is a registered sex offender, police said.

During an interview with detectives, Cooley allegedly admitted to his involvement in the assault, police said. He was booked into Santa Clara County’s main jail on sexual assault and probation violation charges.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Ghezzi at (408) 277-4102. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (408) 947-STOP.
