A man who was killed in a four-vehicle crash on northbound state Highway 237 in Sunnyvale early this morning has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office as 51-year-old Tariq Khanzada of Fremont.
The crash occurred around 2:05 a.m. on Highway 237 just east of Lawrence Expressway, according to the CHP.
A 46-year-old Concord man driving a 2002 BMW lost control on the transition ramp to eastbound Highway 237 and collided with a concrete wall on the right side of the ramp, according to the CHP.
The BMW then continued traveling across the highway until it finally came to a stop partially in the center median and the far left lane.
Khanzada arrived in a 1997 Mercedes and stopped on the right shoulder, the CHP said.
A 32-year-old Santa Clara man driving a Nissan in the left lane collided with the BMW. Then a 47-year-old Hayward woman driving a 2005 Mercedes in the left lane also collided with the BMW.
Officers could not determine which vehicle struck Khanzada or when he was hit, but the impact propelled him over the concrete center divider and onto the No. 2 lane of westbound Highway 237.
It was unclear if he was ejected from a vehicle or had been standing on the roadway and was struck by traffic, the CHP said.
Officers arrested the driver of the 2002 BMW on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs. He has been identified as Alex Turcios.
He was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with moderate injuries.
The Santa Clara man and Hayward woman suffered minor injuries in the crash and were transported to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, according to the CHP.
All four vehicles involved were impounded.
The collision resulted in a partial closure of both directions of Highway 237 until about 5:40 a.m.
