A man sentenced to jail in Santa Cruz County Superior Court this morning had to be Tased by sheriff’s deputies when he resisted arrest and attacked a deputy, the sheriff’s office said.
The incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. after Judge Robert Atack sentenced 29-year-old Angel Terriquez to jail for theft-related charges.
Terriquez, who is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 310 pounds, resisted when a pair of deputies attempted to take him into custody, according to the sheriff’s office.
Terriquez’s family and several in-custody defendants watched as he struggled with the deputies until a court staff member activated an alert system.
Within moments, several deputies and officers from allied agencies arrived to help. A deputy used a Taser stun gun to subdue Terriquez, and he was taken into custody after he was cleared at the hospital.
During the altercation, a deputy suffered a blow to the neck but did not seek medical attention, according to the sheriff’s office.
Terriquez was booked into Santa Cruz County’s main jail. The new charges against him are battery on a peace officer and resisting arrest.
