A man who opened fire on two police officers after being pulled over for a routine stop last November will be sentenced in October to 48 years in state prison, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.

Gabriel Sanchez, 28, of San Jose, pleaded guilty to three counts of assault with a firearm on a police officer and one count of discharging a firearm at an occupied motor vehicle. Sanchez also admitted that he intentionally discharged the firearm while committing the crime, according to the district attorney’s office.

San Jose police arrested Sanchez on the night of Nov. 14, when he fired several rounds at a patrol vehicle after officers stopped to question him for running against a traffic signal on Keyes Street, according to police.

The officers were not injured and the patrol car was not damaged, according to San Jose police.

Sanchez fled on foot but officers found him two hours later hiding in his girlfriend’s home.

Sanchez is scheduled to be sentenced at 9 a.m. on Oct. 15.
