March for immigration reform planned this weekend

Supporters of immigration reform will march in San Jose this Sunday to press Congress and President Obama to reform the immigration system this year.

Cesar Juarez, director of organizing for Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network, said the purpose of the march is to hold elected officials accountable and to give supporters an opportunity to voice their opinions on immigration reform.

“By this march, we are going to show the power that our community has and that we’re going to use, not just our power to march and to call and send e-mails, but also show our civic participation,” Juarez said.

The march is organized by United Voices, a coalition of faith leaders, students, labor unions and nonprofits across Santa Clara County.

On Sunday, participants will gather at 11:30 a.m. at four San Jose churches: St. Patrick Proto-Cathedral Parish, Sacred Heart Church, St. Leo the Great Parish, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

From those spots, the groups will march to Plaza de Cesar Chavez downtown.

The march is in solidarity with the national “March For America” being held in Washington, D.C.
