A 32-year-old man died after crashing his Camaro convertible into a tree on state Highway 9 in Monte Sereno early this morning, according to police.

The man, identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office as Mariposa resident Ryan Patrick Littleton, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Camaro west on Highway 9 between Rose and Ridgecrest avenues when he lost control at about 12:20 a.m.

Police said the Camaro veered off the roadway and went onto the center median, knocking over a small tree and then crashing into a bigger one before coming to rest.

The impact caused the car’s engine to catch fire, according to police.

Paramedics responded, but Littleton was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Santa Clara County Fire Department assisted in extinguishing the fire.

Officers shut down both directions of the highway until about 5 a.m. to investigate the accident. Police still don’t know whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the crash to call traffic Officer Sam Wonnell at (408) 354-8600.
