San Jose residents are invited to attend a meeting tonight on crime prevention and neighborhood safety at San Jose City Hall.

The meeting, organized by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Santa Clara Valley and co-sponsored by Councilman Kansen Chu, is a presentation on crime prevention as well as a forum on how residents can work with and assist law enforcement and other agencies in the face of anticipated layoffs resulting from budget cuts, said Rosa Santiago, a spokeswoman for Chu.

“It’s valuable for residents to stay informed and know of programs and services offered to them,” Santiago said. “Many think calling 911 is all they have.”

The presentation will cover topics such as crime prevention services for youth and adults, establishing partnerships to improve safety, the neighborhood watch program, National Night Out, the benefits of forming a neighborhood association, and community building.

Speakers will include Police Chief Chris Moore and Mini Le from the Police Department’s crime prevention unit. Community activists Bob Sippel and Alofa Talivaa are also scheduled to speak.

The meeting will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Council Chambers.

Translators will be available in Spanish and Vietnamese.

Tonight’s meeting is the second in a series of monthly meetings. The next one, on the topic of child welfare, will be held on May 19.
