The Metropolitan Transportation Commission will contribute $4.3 million towards a project to ease congestion on U.S. Highway 101 in east San Jose, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority officials announced this week.

Construction of the initial phase of the Highway 101-Yerba Buena to Interstate Highway 280 project is slated to start next spring and includes the addition of a southbound lane from south of Story Road to north of Capitol Expressway. The Highway 101 and Tully Road interchange will also be reconstructed.

In later stages, an access ramp will be added from southbound Highway 101 to Yerba Buena Road and the Highway 101 and Capitol Expressway interchange will be reconfigured.

In a statement, Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese said the project “not only puts people to work and ensures that the funds stay in the area, it also puts the remaining construction phases of the project in excellent shape to compete for future transportation funding programs.”
