San Jose police Capt. Rikki Goede is the department’s new assistant chief of police.

Goede was appointed by police Chief Chris Moore to take the place of Diane Urban, a 25-year veteran of the department who recently left San Jose to become the chief of police in Hayward.

Goede’s promotion follows 15 years at the San Jose Police Department, where she started in patrol. Over the years she has served in numerous assignments, including narcotics, community services, day detectives, internal affairs, gang investigations and homicide.

She was the southern division patrol captain prior to her promotion.

Goede graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and also worked 10 years for the San Diego Police Department.

City manager Debra Figone lauded Goede for her commitment to reaching out to the San Jose community.

“In addition to her strong policing skills, she understands the importance of building positive police-community relations through partnerships and open dialogue with residents, neighborhood leaders and businesses,” Figone said in a statement.

As the assistant chief, Goede will oversee the day-to-day operations of the department.
