San Jose police are investigating the stabbing of a 49-year-old man in the city Tuesday afternoon.
Police responded to a reported assault at about 1:35 p.m. in the unit block of South Eighth Street.
A fight had broken out among a group of about five people, police reported, during which a man who was being badly beaten brandished a knife and stabbed another man. The suspect then took off on foot.
The stabbing victim was transported to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Police are searching for the suspect, who is believed to be a Hispanic man in his mid 20s to mid 30s.
Officer Jose Garcia said that police are investigating the motive behind the fight and stabbing, but they have no reason to believe it was gang-related.
