An evacuation order for a San Jose neighborhood was lifted late this morning after a PG&E crew shut off gas to a house where a gas meter was struck by a car earlier today.

The crash was reported at about 9:15 a.m. at 447 E. Saint John St., fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez said.

A car collided with another vehicle and went out of control, striking a gas meter attached to a house, she said.

No injuries were reported, and the house itself was not damaged, Gutierrez said.

The crash, however, caused a gas leak, and about two-dozen firefighters helped evacuate nearby homes as a precaution.

PG&E stopped the flow of gas, and a hazardous materials team is checking the house to ensure that there are no lingering gas vapors inside the residence, Gutierrez said.
