Grief counselors will be available at Milpitas High School on the first day of school Monday for students mourning the death of a 17-year-old classmate, a school district spokeswoman said.
Steven Lucatero, who was hit by a car and killed Sunday night, would have been starting his junior year, Milpitas Unified School District spokeswoman Cheryl Jordan said.
Lucatero was hit while riding his bicycle in the 500 block of North Capitol Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, fire department spokesman Sean Simonson said.
Police and firefighters found him lying in the roadway and pronounced him dead at the scene.
“Anytime we hear of a student’s death, particularly with this one, it always leaves a feeling of emptiness,” Jordan said. “We want to see them go on and have a full life and reach their dreams, and when their life comes to a sudden stop like this it’s difficult.”
Jordan said the school has not yet had contact with the family to plan a memorial service, but that grief counselors will be available for students on campus.
“We wish the best for the family and send our greatest regret to them and hope that they can get through it,” Jordan said.
