The condition of a 59-year-old security guard who remained hospitalized today after being assaulted at a San Jose high school over the weekend has been upgraded to stable, police Officer Jose Garcia said.

The man, whose name is being withheld as a safety precaution, was assaulted at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday by three to four males at Herman Intermediate School at 5955 Blossom Ave., Garcia said.

He is a resident of Campbell but works as a guard for a school-contracted security company.

Garcia said a dispatcher at the security company called police Saturday night after losing contact with the guard while he was on routine patrol. The guard had told dispatch he was going to check on a group of people at the campus.

Officers responded and found the man suffering from life-threatening injuries in the playground area of the school, Garcia said.

He was taken to a local hospital and was in critical condition until today, Garcia said.

Garcia said three or four male suspects were involved in the assault, but no arrests have been made.

Their motive has not been determined, but the guard was not targeted or robbed, Garcia said.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects. Anyone with information is requested to call Detective Cebrian at (408) 277-4781.
