Shots fired during robbery at Castroville grocery store

Monterey County sheriff’s deputies are investigating an armed robbery at a Castroville grocery store on Wednesday night in which shots were fired.

The robbery occurred shortly before 9 p.m. at Elkhorn Superette at 2016 Elkhorn Road, according to the sheriff’s office.

Two male suspects wearing black ski masks and armed with semi-automatic handguns entered the business and pointed their guns at two employees, sheriff’s officials said.

Both fired several rounds into the floor and ceiling and demanded money from the employees. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash and left, according to the sheriff’s office. It was not known if they fled in a car or on foot.

The first suspect was described as a white man standing at about 6 feet tall with a medium build. He was wearing a black ski mask, black jacket, black gloves, gray pants and black shoes.

The second suspect was described as a male around 5 feet 3 inches tall with a medium build. He was also wearing a black ski mask, black jacket, black gloves, black pants and white shoes.

Their ages could not be determined.
