SPCA for Monterey County today came to the rescue of several rabbits, dogs, doves and chickens that were kept in cages filled with feces at a home in Castroville.
SPCA officers discovered the animals while responding to a call at a nearby home.
They found the animals, including 28 rabbits, three dogs, one newborn puppy, 19 doves and 22 chickens, in small cages filled with feces, most of them without food or water, according to the SPCA.
The water that was available to some of the animals was “filthy and undrinkable,” according to the SPCA.
Anyone who is interested in helping or adopting the rescued animals or to report animal cruelty is asked to call the SPCA at (831) 373-2631 or donate online at www.SPCAmc.org.
