The SPCA for Monterey County is seeking a home for a bird that staff members rescued last December from a dirty cage outside in cold weather with no access to food or water.
The Mitred Conure, named Tyson, currently lives at the shelter’s Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, which rescues wildlife and houses exotic animals.
Tyson wears a sweater to allow his feathers to grow back after he was found with the majority of the feathers plucked off his body while undergoing stress from his living situation and an untreated infection. SPCA staff says that it is necessary for his adopters to keep sweaters on hand for Tyson because some of his feathers might never grow back.
Conures are described as social parrots that are popular pets because of their clown-like and inquisitive disposition. Inexperienced owners looking for an easy pet might find them noisy and stressed out if they are not given enough attention.
Rosanna Leighton, a supervisor at the Wildlife Center, said that while Tyson has special needs, “he’s a charming little bird.”
“Tyson is slightly bossy but he loves company,” Leighton said. “He will need someone who can give him lots of TLC.”
Anyone inquiring information about adopting Tyson or interested in learning about other exotic animals available for adoption is encouraged to call (831) 373-2631, ext. 227.
