Firefighters have controlled a fire that damaged a six-unit apartment building in San Jose this afternoon, a fire captain said.

A two-alarm fire was reported at 2:47 p.m. at 2630 Mueller Ave. and was controlled at 4:20 p.m., fire Capt. Chuck Rangel said.

The fire appears to have started somewhere between two units and extended into the attic, he said.

Police assisted in evacuating the building. One man was taken to a hospital with a respiratory condition, Rangel said.

He said five of the six units suffered some degree of fire damage, and that some of the occupants will be permanently displaced.

The American Red Cross is offering assistance.

Mueller Avenue was closed in both directions until about 6 p.m.
