Firefighters have extinguished a two-alarm residential fire in south San Jose, a fire captain said.

The blaze was reported at 1:53 p.m. at a two-story townhouse in the 4600 block of Columbia River Court, a dispatcher said.

A smoke detector alerted the homeowner, who quickly evacuated the townhouse along with two children, fire Capt. Scott Kouns said.

The fire began in a garage attached to the back of the townhouse, and smoke and fire spread to the second floor of the unit, Kouns said.

Firefighters controlled the blaze by 2:14 p.m.

The homeowner suffered minor burns to the hands. The contents of the garage were destroyed, Kouns said.
