Two arrested in connection with church burglary

Two men were arrested last week in connection with numerous burglaries at a San Jose church over the last month, police said today.

Police arrested a 21-year-old transient identified as Edwin Rennels and 24-year-old San Jose resident Anthony Regna on suspicion of burglarizing Korean Baptist Church at 1056 Pinewood Drive between Aug. 20 and Sept. 24, according to police.

Detectives discovered evidence that identified the men and then conducted a surveillance operation on Friday, during which an officer allegedly saw the men break into the church, police said.

Patrol officers and a canine unit established a perimeter around the church and tried to arrest the men when they exited. The suspects resisted arrest, however, and led police on a foot chase until canine officers caught up with them and placed them under arrest, according to police.

Rennels and Regna were booked into Santa Clara County’s main jail on burglary charges.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Detective Katie Reyes at (408) 277-4401 or Crime Stoppers at (408) 947-STOP (7867).
