A jury Friday found a 61-year-old man guilty of committing lewd acts on a child under 14 and indecent exposure, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.
John Matthews, of San Jose, was convicted for the crime that he committed in Sept. 2005 when he exposed himself and made sexual comments to a 6-year-old girl before touching her in a lewd manner during a party at a relative’s house in Monterey, according to the district attorney’s office.
The victim disclosed the molestation to her mother two months later, and when she confronted Matthews, he admitted to committing the act. Matthews was arrested by Monterey police in Oct. 2007.
Monterey County Judge Larry Hayes will sentence Matthews at a hearing on Sept. 17. He faces a maximum of eight years in prison and mandatory lifetime sex registration.
